PRINCES II

Photographic series, variable formats

The photographic component is composed of images drawn from Snapchat messages sent by the boys during the first ceremony and Louchy’s wake. Exploring the potential of these text–image–emoji assemblages as a vernacular form of language, the installation examines the impact of these images when they are removed from their original digital context and brought into the exhibition space. Their narrative potential emerges almost like a form of digital collage, revealing how grief, affection, and tenderness circulate within the group. They offer a space for expressing emotions that are rarely articulated verbally by young black men within a predominantly masculine community.
The images are presented in light boxes, preserving the elongated vertical format of the original smartphone screens, in dimensions of 35 × 55 cm. The exhibition space is entirely darkened to recreate the nocturnal atmosphere of the film and of the ceremonies themselves, immersing the viewer in the temporal, emotional, and spatial conditions in which these rituals take place.
